Vietnam court sentences Australian woman, 73, to death on heroin charges

A court in southern Vietnam has sentenced a 73-year-old Vietnam-conceived Australian lady to death for trafficking heroin covered up in bars of cleanser, a few state-run media outlets provided details regarding Thursday.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Court discovered Nguyen Thi Huong blameworthy on Wednesday of having 36 bars of cleanser loaded down with 2.8 kg (6 lb) of heroin in her things as she was getting onto a flight to Australia in December 2014, the Ho Chi Minh City Police daily paper said.

Court authorities and Australian representatives in the city couldn't be gone after remark about the case.

In an announcement, the Australian government communicated concern and emphasized its restriction to the death penalty.

"We are worried that an Australian native has been sentenced to death in Vietnam," the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said. "We will keep on providing consular help and backing to the lady and her family."

The Tuoi Tre (Youth) daily paper and news entry tuoitrenews.vn reported that Huong had said she was given the cleanser as a blessing by a lady, distinguished just as Helen, while they were on a trek to the beach front city of Vung Tau.

Huong advised the court she needed to take them to Australia as endowments and didn't know about what they contained.

In any case, the Ho Chi Minh City Police daily paper, controlled by the city's police, said Huong had neglected to demonstrate that the other lady was genuine.

The Tuoi Tre daily paper distributed a photograph of Huong covering her mouth with her hands as she was taken from the court after the decision. Huong has 15 days in which to advance against capital punishment.
